No American volunteers will work in Playas for Carnival 2010. Mayor, Michael Achi believes 2 Ecuadorian lifeguards can handle the Carnival crowds in Playas. As of Tuesday, he would not reinstate the 20 lifeguards per direct communication from Project Ecuador director, Bridget Srodon. Our mission is to create jobs, not replace jobs. We stand side by side with our Ecuadorian brothers. This is truly a sad day…. citizens will drown.
Hey Paul…
Heads up on some of the statistics here in Playas - The mayor won’t confirm any details, but the hospital is saying that there were a total of 10 drownings during Carnival this year due to heavy crowds and lacking lifeguards. In the weeks since then, there have been a slew of drownings and severe medical incidents. It’s truly sad whats happening here.
I find this truly disturbing. I hope the Mayor of Playas realizes the damage he has done and will continue to do without the proper number of lifeguards. I commend Project Ecuador for the outstanding work they are doing to save the lives of so many in my native country.
This guy must be special ed, because they need more than 2 lifeguards
After Carnival 2010, the Mayor of Playas reinstated the lifeguards for the peak season. Plus, he has 5 full time lifeguards earning a living wage. A dramatic twist of events. For Carnival 2011, the Mayor hired 15 more seaonal lifeguards. A nice step in the right direction.
