No American volunteers will work in Playas for Carnival 2010. Mayor, Michael Achi believes 2 Ecuadorian lifeguards can handle the Carnival crowds in Playas. As of Tuesday, he would not reinstate the 20 lifeguards per direct communication from Project Ecuador director, Bridget Srodon. Our mission is to create jobs, not replace jobs. We stand side by side with our Ecuadorian brothers. This is truly a sad day…. citizens will drown.

Long Beach’s sister city, Manta, Ecuador, is now a sponsor of Project Ecuador. Paul met with Chairpersons Pat and John McMaster and agreed they will arrange a meeting with Manta’s officials including a ceremony to present donations.

We are very fortunate to have a partner from Long Beach to share this humanitarian mission.

Check out the Long Beach sister cities website for more info!

The new mayor of Playas is Michael Achi.  John and Paul were introduced to Achi during Carnival 2009. He vowed support for the lifeguards. The city  government is now responsible for the safegurding of beaches, so we’re very optimistic to see Achi elected! Gaby anticipates a return to civic activity in August, as many were awaiting the election results.

Salvavidas Aye!
- Rafael Correa re-elected president- Party: PAIS-35
- Jimmy Jairala new Prefecto of Guayas (like the governor in the states) - Part: UNO
